Beautiful but Safe: 5 Non-Toxic Spring Flowers for Cat and Dog Owners

Nestled in the heart of Cliftonville since 2001, The Secret Garden has always been more than just a flower shop. We are a part of this vibrant Margate community, and we know that for many of our neighbours, a home isn’t really complete without two things: a fresh bouquet of seasonal flowers and a happy, healthy pet.

At this time of the year, many of us are looking to brighten our homes with beautiful flowers, but if you share your space with a cat or dog, you might be worried about which flowers are safe to bring inside. Many popular spring choices, like lilies, tulips, and daffodils, can actually be toxic to our furry friends.

Because of this, we are often asked which flowers are non-toxic to cats and dogs. To help you celebrate the season safely, we’ve got a list of our top five favourite pet-friendly spring flowers that are as beautiful as they are "paws-itively" safe.

1. Freesia: Freesias are a Secret Garden favourite. They offer a delicate, sweet fragrance that can fill a room without being overpowering. Best of all, they are entirely non-toxic to both dogs and cats. They come in a variety of vibrant spring colours, from sunny yellows to deep purples.

2. Snapdragons (Antirrhinum): With their unique shape and tall stems, snapdragons add wonderful height to any arrangement. They are completely safe for pets, making them a fantastic alternative to more dangerous tall-stemmed flowers like Gladioli.

3. Roses: You can never go wrong with a classic. We always recommend removing the thorns to keep curious noses safe from scratches. Roses are non-toxic to pets, and we source beautiful varieties that look stunning wrapped in our eco-friendly paper.

4. Lisianthus: If you love the ruffled look of peonies (which can unfortunately cause tummy upset for pets), Lisianthus is the perfect pet-safe substitute. They also last a long time in a vase.

5. Gerberas: Bright and cheerful Gerberas are a safe bet for a pet-friendly household. They bring a pop of modern colour to any kitchen table without posing a risk to your cat or dog.

The Secret Garden’s Commitment to You (and the Planet)

When you order a pet-safe bouquet from us, you aren't just protecting your animals; you’re protecting the environment too!

  • Eco-Friendly Wrapping: We avoid single-use plastics and non-recyclable foams where possible.
  • Emission-Free Delivery: Whether you’re in Margate, Broadstairs, or Ramsgate, your flowers will arrive via our 100% electric van. We believe that beautiful flowers shouldn't cost the earth.

A Quick Tip for Pet Owners:
Even with non-toxic flowers, we always suggest keeping vases in a secure spot where they won't be easily knocked over during a "zoomie" session! If your pet does ingest a large amount of any flower or plant, it’s always best to keep an eye on them and consult your local vet if they show signs of being unwell.
