The Secret to Long-Lasting Cut Flowers
Elizabeth Hammocks
To keep your flowers fresher for longer once they have arrived at your door, follow these simple, professional tips to extend the life of your blooms and keep your home feeling fresh.
1. Before you even touch the flowers, make sure your vase is "squeaky clean." Bacteria is the main enemy of cut flowers as they block the stems and prevent them from drinking.
-
The Pro Tip: Wash your vase with warm, soapy water and a drop of bleach to kill any lingering microbes.
2. Once you’ve unwrapped your bouquet from our packaging, it’s time to trim the stems.
-
Use sharp, clean scissors or a kitchen knife to cut the stems at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption.
-
Never use blunt scissors, as they can pinch the "veins" of the stem, making it harder for the flower to hydrate.
3. Remove "Submerged" Foliage, as any leaves that sit below the water line will rot, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.
-
The Sustainable Choice: Strip the lower leaves and add them to your compost bin rather than the general waste!
- Add flower food: Flower food contains nutrients that can help extend the life of your flowers. Follow the instructions on the package to add the right amount of flower food to the water.
4. Change the water completely every two days and re-trim. Every time you change the water, give the stems a tiny 1cm trim to open up fresh channels for hydration.
5. Flowers are sensitive to their surroundings, so making sure you have the correct environment for them is essential in making sure they last as long as possible.
-
Keep it Cool: Avoid placing your arrangement in direct sunlight, near radiators, or in drafty hallways.
-
The Fruit Factor: Keep your flowers away from the fruit bowl! Ripening fruits (especially apples and bananas) release ethylene gas, which tells flowers it's time to wilt and drop their petals.
And finally enjoy!
Stay Green, Stay Floral.
